Mabrey is coming off a historic 53-point game, so this has all the makings of a classic “Mabrey good, me take over” prop caveman logic play. It also means plenty of people will think it’s a trap for that exact reason. However, Mabrey has been one of my favorite players for years. She gives max effort every night, and WNBA casuals who only really know Caitlin Clark and a couple other players don’t realize Mabrey is probably much closer to what they expect Clark to look like whenever they tune into a Fever game. She’s willing to pull from the logo multiple times a game and has the range to knock them down. This is also the exact matchup I laddered Clark’s 3s against last week. Phoenix grades out as the best possible matchup in my model for high-volume 3-point shooters like Clark and Mabrey. My actual projection is only around 3.7 made 3s, which is basically a coin flip to clear the base line. But that’s before factoring in something my model can’t account for: this game being on national TV immediately after a 53-point performance. I wouldn’t be shocked if she takes an extra 1-2 heat-check attempts as part of a bit of a victory lap. That’s not why I’m betting it, but it certainly doesn’t hurt when you’re already showing value on the matchup/projections.
