Monday Best Bet. This is good to -170. Hard Rock and Kalshi have the best odds at -150. Louisville has been one of the worst road teams and has not been particularly good against the top teams they’ve faced. HOWEVER, this is a nightmare schematic matchup for North Carolina, and we have to take some of Louisville’s road losses with a grain of salt as they were without their best player, Mikel Brown Jr., for quite some time. Since losing Caleb Wilson, North Carolina is 2-1 with wins over Pittsburgh and Syracuse, and a beating loss to NC State. You know who operates much like NC State? Louisville. Sure, UNC will have Henri Veesaar in this one, but their defense is not built to stop a team like Louisville. This game is also just a talent mismatch. While UNC is the big brand, Louisville is the more talented and deeper team. While Veesaar will be the best player on the floor, UNC drops off a cliff after him. Meanwhile, Louisville is strong 1-8 and doesn’t have any real drop off in talent when going to the bench. Louisville has four players above a 6.0 BPR, while UNC only has one (Veesaar). As mentioned, after losing Caleb Wilson, UNC is very thin behind Veesaar. Their next highest BPR player is Jarin Stevenson at a 4.47 BPR. Seven of Louisville’s eight rotation players have a BPR above 5.0. It really can’t be overstated how much deeper Louisville is. I will admit, backing this Louisville team on the road is risky, but even after giving a major home court advantage to UNC, I still can’t get to this number. Our model has Louisville winning 82.23 to 78.73, which implies a fair spread of Louisville -3.5. Now let’s talk about the schematic advantages the Cardinals will have tonight. UNC has major issues defending elite ball-screen and isolation creators in their switch and drop coverage, and they’ve been burned by every point guard they’ve faced in that mold. Mikel Brown Jr. has been on fire and will be a nightmare matchup for UNC. The real place UNC will get burned is from three. The two games they won without Caleb Wilson came against teams that simply can’t shoot. Now they face Louisville, one of the best high volume shooting teams in the country. The Cardinals are shooting 35.9% from deep in ACC play, but that number has jumped to 39% over their last four games. UNC owns the worst three point defense in the ACC and now faces a team that ranks first in the ACC and 13th in the country in three point attempts per game. This is a very similar schematic matchup to NC State, and we all saw how that game ended. I was very high on Louisville coming into the year, and despite some up and down results, this is a team nobody wants to face. When they’re hot from deep, they can beat anyone in the country. Despite the current AP Poll rankings, I have these teams much further apart than most. I have Louisville as the 11th best team in the country and North Carolina at 27th. Losing Caleb Wilson can’t be overstated, and I think this UNC team continues to fall. ShotQuality is even higher on Louisville, ranking them as the 4th best team in the country. While Louisville’s defense remains suspect on the road, their offense more than makes up for it. The Cardinals have struggled with turnovers, but UNC is second to last in the ACC in turnovers forced and are actually bottom 25 in the entire country in that metric. While Louisville hasn’t been great on the road, this is one of the most veteran teams in the country. As the season goes on, I expect some correction in their road efficiency. This team is far too experienced to continue struggling away from home. They’ve also faced a tough schedule, so I’m willing to give them a slight pass. I obviously like Louisville to cover, but I don’t want to be laying points on the road. I’ll stick with the moneyline at a juicy but still reasonable price compared to our model’s -201 projection.

Louisville is shooting 39% from 3 in their last 7 games and UNC is the worst 3pt defense in the ACC. UNC’s back court has no answer for Mikel Brown Jr
