After a close 24-19 loss to Washington State, they bounced back with a dominant 24-5 victory over Northwestern. Their offense ranks 10th in Offensive Success Rate, and while they’ve had challenges in field position, averaging 128th, their efficiency through the air has been outstanding. They rank 19th in Passing Success Rate and 15th in Passing PPA, with a balanced run game that ranks eighth in Success Rate. Their only downside offensively has been explosiveness, where they rank just 99th overall, but the consistency of both the pass and run games puts them in a strong position. Defensively, Washington has been a mixed bag. Their pass defense ranks an elite fifth in Passing PPA Allowed, but their run defense has been shaky, sitting at 84th in Rushing PPA Allowed. However, they match up favorably against a Rutgers offense that relies heavily on the run, ranking eighth in the country in run rate but struggling with rushing explosiveness at 116th. While Rutgers has had an impressive start, going 3-0, their offense lacks the same dynamism, despite a respectable 15th in rushing Success Rate and solid quarterback play from Athan Kaliakmanis. While Rutgers' story is a feel-good one, Washington’s superior passing attack, led by Will Rogers, should be the deciding factor. On the road, in a hostile environment, Washington is simply the more complete team, with a more reliable quarterback and a stronger, more balanced offense. Despite Rutgers' early-season success, Washington has the tools to win outright in what should be a competitive game.
