UPDATE: Jokic mysteriously ruled in. He wasn’t supposed to play for another week. This should be a blowout win for the Clippers. Kawhi Leonard remains questionable, but when is he not? I still expect him to suit up after getting a day of rest yesterday. Don’t look now, but the Clippers have been playing some really good basketball lately. Over their last 10 games, they rank as the third best team in the NBA in net rating. They are 9-1 in that span and sit top five in both offensive and defensive rating. This is the team we finally expected to see preseason. All of this is happening while they’ve also been one of the unluckiest teams all season, ranking 24th in our NBA luck metric.Meanwhile, this Nuggets team just can’t catch a break with injuries. Aaron Gordon is now out with a hamstring strain, which means Nikola Jokic, Cam Johnson, Christian Braun, and Aaron Gordon are all sidelined. That’s four of the five starters they opened the season with unavailable. Jamal Murray is the lone soldier left, and even he has been in and out of the lineup after quite literally carrying this team to a few wins. Since losing Jokic, the Nuggets have been fine in terms of wins, but the advanced metrics absolutely hate this team right now. The fact that they’re winning games is honestly astonishing. Despite going 9-6 over their last 15 games, they rank just 20th in net rating, 24th in defensive rating, and 15th in eFG%. The ways they are winning are not sustainable, and this Clippers team should expose them tonight. Not to mention, this is the second leg of a back to back for an already depleted Nuggets rotation. Jamal Murray likely won’t sit, but it’s always a possibility. The Nuggets shot 50% from three last night and still needed a nail biter to beat the Nets at home. They had an incredible shooting night and were still in a dogfight with one of the worst teams in the league. The Nets were also down Thomas, Clowney, Williams, and Demin. That should tell you everything you need to know about the current state of this Nuggets team. Denver has been solid at a rest disadvantage this season, but they’ve always had Aaron Gordon and Jamal Murray available to hold things together. Now those dominoes keep falling, and I’d be shocked if the Clippers don’t handle this game from start to finish. This also isn’t just a standard back to back scenario. This will be the Nuggets fourth game in six nights. The Clippers prefer slower-paced games, and shockingly, the Nuggets are playing at the second slowest pace in the entire NBA in January. This is also a revenge spot for the Clippers after losing by double digits to a fully healthy Nuggets team in November. This should be a smash spot. You would also think the Nuggets are a better team at home, but that’s not the case. The Nuggets are just 13-9 at home compared to 19-7 on the road.
