Messick is an intriguing prospect, but this is a brutal draw for his first start. I have the Dodgers’ projected lineup as the 2nd toughest to strike out on the slate, and on top of the typical Opening Day pitch cap, there’s real risk he gets chased even earlier if things go sideways. I have him getting pulled around Mookie Betts’ third plate appearance and project the under 4.5 closer to -210. Messick did a great job last season getting ahead in the count, with hitters taking strikes at an elevated rate, but that didn’t carry over in spring. He struggled more to get ahead, and his called strike rate regressed closer to league average, which is what we’d expect. I’m projecting him more as a 22% K rate type to open the season, and that’s a tough profile against one of the most difficult lineups to strike out.
