We took this yesterday at 11, but 12 is fine too. Don’t get me wrong, this Miami Ohio run and season has been awesome, but unfortunately they ran into one of the worst possible matchups with Tennessee. Miami Ohio got the best of SMU because of their similar frantic style of play. SMU was honestly the perfect matchup for the RedHawks, and they took full advantage, winning that game pretty handedly. While I give them their respect, I think this is a tough emotional spot for them after finally getting their tournament win and proving everyone wrong. Tennessee will make reality set in. While I understand the lack of faith in Tennessee due to prior years, I feel like this year’s team is already getting written off. However, this Vols team is very good, and the advanced metrics love them. Tennessee ranks 16th in KenPom and 15th on Bart Torvik, yet people continue to disrespect this team. Their scoring options are Ja’Kobi Gillespie, who is an elite shot maker, and Nate Ament, who is a first round draft pick. This team can go on lulls offensively, but in reality it’s not as bad as you think. They still rank 33rd in offensive efficiency and are the best offensive rebounding team in the country. This is where Tennessee will abuse Miami Ohio tonight. The RedHawks are not a good rebounding team and will be overwhelmed with the size of Tennessee. Miami Ohio already can’t stop anyone inside, but if Tennessee is consistently getting second chance looks, it could be a long night for Miami Ohio. I’ve spoken about this a few times on Twitter: the Miami Ohio defense is some of the worst defense I’ve seen for a tournament team. They are 150th in defensive efficiency and 191st in two point percentage allowed. While those stats are already bad, we also have to remember this team plays in the MAC and has faced a very easy strength of schedule. The Tennessee offense should have no problems scoring down low and getting to the foul line. Tennessee is also in the 98th percentile in generating catch and shoot opportunities. This game will also be played at an unfamiliar tempo for the RedHawks. Teams in the MAC like to play fast, and so did SMU, so Miami Ohio felt comfortable playing their game. However, Tennessee simply won’t let them speed this game up. The Vols make every game into a slow boxing match. Tennessee is 305th in tempo, which is the last thing Miami Ohio wants to see. SMU played right into Miami Ohio’s hand, Tennessee will not. Also, Miami Ohio will be at a rest disadvantage, which doesn’t bode well in what will be a very physical game. My numbers make this game a fair spread of 13.65, so I’m fine with laying the 11. Going from an SMU defense that was 127th in 2026 to a top 15 Tennessee defense will be quite the adjustment. The rebounding advantage will be the difference tonight. If Miami Ohio continues to nail every fadeaway three, then so be it, but I’ll pay to see it. Give me the Vols.
