St. John’s dominated this matchup last season, going 2-0 against Dan Hurley. They did it by pressuring the ball hard and using size on the perimeter. UConn struggled with ball handling and perimeter defense, which took them completely out of sync for long stretches. St. John’s was able to control the paint and dominate the key areas like shot attempts and turnover margin. The recipe is there, but can they repeat it? I think they can, even though this is a big time revenge spot for Hurley and company. I’ll admit this UConn team is certainly better than last year’s group, but I still like the Johnnies here. UConn has improved ball handlers, yet they’re still posting a near 18% turnover rate in conference play, a very similar number to last season. St. John’s has been the second best turnover inducing defense in the Big East, and even more impressively, has been the best ball handling team in conference play. The Johnnies offense is committing turnovers just 12.9% of the time, which has really minimized mistakes. That’s been the key as they’ve rattled off eight straight convincing wins. The St. John’s offense is also operating much differently and more efficiently this season. They are now inside-out and high-low heavy, ranking in the 98th percentile in both. They’re using Zeby Ejiofor as the hub while letting their athletes play in motion and cut effectively. The offense is far more structured and much less frantic than last year. Last season they thrived on second chance opportunities, but this version is more efficient and sustainable. St. John’s currently ranks first in offensive efficiency in Big East play while still owning the third most efficient defense.
This is also a good matchup for the Johnnies. UConn’s defense is elite at running teams off the three point line, but St. John’s prefers to get to the rim. On top of that, UConn has struggled badly with fouling, allowing free throws at the 13th highest rate in the country. This is far from ideal against a St. John’s offense that loves getting to the line. The St. John’s drop defense has historically bothered UConn, and I expect that to show up again. Their jumbo lineups can disrupt UConn’s screening action and force turnovers. Not to mention, this UConn team may be a bit overrated. They’re currently ranked third in the country, but advanced metrics aren’t nearly as bullish. I have them rated 10th nationally with a 22.1 rating. KenPom has them eighth, Bart Torvik seventh, and Shot Quality shockingly has them 20th. The Shot Quality data is especially low on this team, viewing them as a 16-7 squad despite their 22-1 record. UConn has also been a little fortunate, ranking as the fifth luckiest team in our college basketball luck metrics. They’ve survived two overtime games and escaped with two point wins over BYU and Georgetown. Flip a few late game moments and they could easily have more losses. While the losses aren’t there on paper, it’s important to identify teams that are likely overperforming, and the Huskies fit that profile. Despite being 7-0 on the road, UConn ranks just 129th in Hasla Metrics away from home stat. They’re clearly less effective outside of Storrs. Our model sees this game as very close, but I really like the spot for the Johnnies here. Give me St. John’s to cover at home.
