I’m going to go ahead and say it, the model does not like this play. However, this is a spot I’ve had circled for weeks, and I’m trusting my gut here. Let me start by saying Miami is an excellent football team. However, this is the absolute peak of the market on them. They’re undefeated and sitting at #2 in the AP Poll with public perception at an all time high. Despite this, we have the Canes rated slightly lower at just 7th nationally and now is the perfect time to take advantage of this inflated hype. It’s worth remembering that this line opened at Miami -6.5 just a few weeks ago. Since then, the Hurricanes have continued to dominate while Louisville dropped a heartbreaker at home to Virginia. However, don’t let that loss fool you, Louisville handed that game away and still nearly won in overtime. They finished with an 85% postgame win expectancy and could very easily be 5-0 right now. Despite that result, we still rate Louisville as the 31st best team in the country and remain high on their overall profile. Now, let’s break down the matchup. Louisville’s defense is elite and that’s the main driver for this play. Their front seven is a top five unit nationally and has been dominant all season. That’s especially important against a Miami team that’s made a living controlling games in the trenches behind one of the best offensive lines in college football. That battle up front will decide a lot tonight. The Cardinals’ secondary has also been lights out, ranking first in the nation in EPA per pass allowed (-0.40). That’s huge against a dangerous Miami passing attack. Even more impressive, this defense limits explosive plays, something Miami thrives on. Slowing the tempo and forcing Miami into long, sustained drives is key here. Just look back at the Virginia game. That offense is electric, yet Louisville held them to just 237 total yards, with two of Virginia’s touchdowns coming off a fumble return and a pick-six. It’s impressive that Louisville still managed to take that one to overtime. This could potentially be the best defense Miami has faced all season. Offensively, Louisville hasn’t hit its stride yet, but the talent is there. Running back Isaac Brown is one of the best in the country, and Miller Moss is an NFL-caliber quarterback. Coming off a bye week, this is a perfect opportunity for them to put it together. Expect a more methodical approach with quick throws and staying ahead of the sticks to neutralize Miami’s pass rush. This game gives me flashbacks to when Louisville went to Clemson as a 10.5-point underdog and won outright last year. While I’m not necessarily calling for an upset, this is a very capable football team. One more note: Miami has been very fortunate this season, ranking 6th in our luck metrics. Teams in that range almost always experience some regression as the season goes on. Also, let’s not forget about Mario Cristobal, the king of making games closer than they need to be. He’s a coach I am completely fine fading. Could I be completely wrong and look dumb after the game? Sure, but I’ll pay to play here. I’m taking Louisville +13 and would take this down to +11.5.
